NEW RELEASE: Full Pantomime Details!

John Nike Leisuresport Complex is holding its 28th annual pantomime on ice, with this year’s being Cinderella. All the fun begins 9th December with a Charity Performance and continues until 13th December…that’s a grand total of seven shows, including a school’s performance on the Thursday. Cinderella is a classic fairy tale about a girl’s journey to find true love, in which a prince, finds a poor peasant girl and falls in love, but wait…there’s a twist! With an evil stepmother and two ugly step sisters who want nothing more than to see the beautiful Cinderella miserable, how will the two lovers find each other? You will only find out at John Nike Leisuresport Complex!
Each year the chairman, John Nike OBE DL, chooses a charity in which all proceeds from the Wednesday night performance go to. In turn, Mr Nike, donates a sum of his own money to take the total up to £5000. This year’s chosen charity is The Multiple Sclerosis Society, who help fight to improve treatment and care for people with MS, thereby enabling them to once again take control of their lives.
With the Pantomime week fast approaching, preparations are already underway with the first full rehearsal going incredibly well, each participant working extra hard to get their individual parts right. Staff, committee members and volunteers at the ice rink have been working day and night to ensure props, lighting, music and costumes are ready for the rehearsals. With a cast of eighty-six, including adults and children, a lot of work goes into each sector. Everybody was in high spirits for their second full dress rehearsal that took place on Sunday 29th November, in which everybody had to be in bright and early at 07:00am, including all crew, staff, performers and parents. By the end of the rehearsal everybody was confident and positive that this will be the best pantomime yet!
Head Coach, Stacey Bullock, along with the other coaches, put in countless amounts of hours into the pantomime to ensure all of the cast are happy and confident in their parts. But it is not only the coaches who work tirelessly to ensure that the pantomime runs to perfection, Bernadette Howard (Ice Rink Assistant Manager and Pantomime Manager), alongside her team and volunteers, create the props, promotional material, programme and many more essential items/tasks. Bernadette told us, “Work for the pantomime first began back in January and has progressed steadily since. Everyone puts all of their effort into making sure everything is ready and runs smoothly on the day. In the few weeks before panto, the atmosphere is so festive that everyone is already in the Christmas spirit early.”
So if you want to do something extra festive and special this year, then come along to the John Nike Leisuresport Complex performance of Cinderella on Ice. To book tickets call 01344 789 000.

“It’s far too early to start thinking about a Panto” – Oh No It’s Not!

With less then three weeks to go we held our very first full dress rehearsal this morning. What a success; we had an extremely good turn out from those who will be in the performance. Most of all, today has shown how much time, commitment and hard work our volunteers put in, we really do appreciate it incredibly.

We can’t forget – A big shout out goes to all the parents who were dragged down to the Ice Rink at half 7 this morning by their enthusiastic youngsters, hopefully an early and peaceful night is inshore for you!

Here’s a few snaps from behind the scenes…

If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, you can do by calling us on 01344 789000 and speaking to our friendly reception team!

Will this be the last big bang for John Nike Leisuresport?

Remember, remember the 5th of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot.

FIREWORKS

We are hosting our annual Free Fireworks this Sunday at 19:00, doors will open at 18:00 with a performance from Berkshire Race Squad. Now with that in mind many people have questioned the certainty of the John Nike Leisuresport Centre, in Bracknell, and whether or not if we are plotting to close our doors one last time.

Some of you may of heard about the complications of our ice, leading to last weekends Bracknell Bee’s Match being postponed and cancelled ice hockey training sessions. Along with the essential maintenance that has been carried out on our Chairlift for the last month. No one can blame you for the unsettled feeling there may be a closure to our centre. However, I must make this very clear that it will not be the case, below is a quick summary of the issues and maintenance that we have encountered the last week or so.

Chairlift – As part of our care and protection to our customers we have to service our chairlift, just like you would a M.O.T for a car. Within the time it was being serviced a few maintenance areas were brought to light, nothing too complicated or serious; some might say that it is just a simple, basic task which takes minutes; like filling you screen wash. Unlike most common cars a chairlift requires large and unusual parts, which typically have to be made from scratch or imported from abroad. Whilst we are waiting for the parts to be made it means the chair lift is out of action. We do have two drag lifts on the slopes, so don’t let this put you off visiting us. We are open as usual, if you would like more information please call 01344 789002.

Ice Pad – All Ice Pads are run off compressor plants which act as a huge refrigerator under the ice. Now normally you will have a few compressors that run simultaneous or together depending on the temperature of the current ice, ideally you want to see it at -7.5 to -8.5 Degrees Celsius. With our ice plant we have a fully working compressor which is simply lacking the support from the others. This means we are able to keep and maintain the ice we have as much as we can, in fact the ice is absolutely fine to skate on…if anything a little wet! Due to the wetness and a few thin patches of ice, the ice pad would not be suitable for an ice hockey match – for those who were wondering.

We do have plans to put in a temporary plant which will build the ice to where we can host ice hockey matches and our pantomime – Cinderella on Ice. The aim is to have the temporary plant up and running before the next scheduled Bracknell Bee’s Home Game.

As for the Ice Rink we are holding business as usual, open for all the members of public. Be sure to check our weekly timetable at http://www.jnlbracknell.co.uk, if there are to be any urgent updates, these too, will be post on our website.

Just when you come, try not to do a Harry Styles manoeuvre!

John Nike Leisuresport – Busy, Busy, Busy!

One week here feels like an eternity and in a good way!

We had an awesome Army hockey tournament from Wednesday right up until today; there was only one down fall…the stench that came with the players. My oh my, for all you hard-core hockey fans and players I’m sure you know what we mean!

Then we had Ice Karting on Thursday, one of the best sessions yet; the guys were insane. Finally we’ve been prepping all day for our first ever UV Foam Party on Ice which is tonight, who’s ready to partaaay. Keep an eye on Facebook next week for all our videos and photo’s.

Outside on the slopes we’ve been busily prepping our chairlift hopefully to be back in action by the end of November. Don’t let this put you off though we have two drag lifts (one for each slope) which work just as well.

Also Pantomime rehearsals and prepping has begun. Check out a sneak peak of our crystal ball chandeliers…FullSizeRender

Last but not least we had a final goodbye to one of our full time members of staff who has been with us for over a decade! Amy Lack who plays and refs hockey is an absolute asset to the our work force. She has worked in every department grinding hard as a steward, ski instructor, snowboard instructor, bar tender, cafeteria assistant, receptionist, duty manager, fitness instructor and gym manager! Yes one lady has accomplished this all under our roof. We bid you farewell and all the best of luck at your new job. Here’s to Amy!IMG_1768[1]

John Nike Leisuresport – Stars in their Eyes!

Here at John Nike Leisuresport we have a wide range of talent! Today we thought we would showcase just a snippet of those who are pushing their way to success.

Amongst who skate, ski and board at our centre we have some real talent breaking all barriers. You can come see for yourself what these individuals have to shout about at any of our Ski and Snowboard Freestyle competitions, Ice Skating competitions and not forgetting our annual pantomime which will amaze all who come to see the draw dropping Cinderella on Ice performance.

Jayin Pansear (aged 11) and Emily-Lucine Phillips (aged 11)10713005_10203785203058816_5761912934088112336_n

Jayin and Emily-Lucine are regular skaters at our centre, often with dark gloomy starts as early as 5am. This does not put them off their 15 hours of weekly ice training, as they frequently rush back from school to continue where they left off.10247250_10152722224496503_8253562223403336303_nThe dance team have been chosen to represent NISA and Great Britain at their first international competition ever!

This is what their coaches David Phillips and Lucine Phillips had to say:

“We wish the young pair every success as they step out on the international arena and forth coming British Championships in December. The youths are extremely hardworking, talented and are for sure a winning combination”.

Francis Howell

Francis is a senior lady who takes pride in skating for Great Britain. Earlier this year she brought a bronze medal back home from an international competition in Hungary, where she again had the honour to represent our nation.

Next month, in Romania, Francis has another amazing opportunity to show what she’s capable of! Skating for Great Britain at The Crystal Skate of Romania, she hopes for another triumph for her skating career.

Her coach Alex Verkovitch adds many hours to assure her success and never ending development.

12112469_10156142119945298_5961910150718718991_nJames Webb (aged 26)

Just recently James Webb, who is a British Slope style Gold Medallist, won Performance Coach of the Year. The award was kindly received from Snowsports England. Snowsports England made a point of showing appreciation to their 100+ coaches and instructors. We’re extremely happy for James who hosts Southern Freestyle club at our centre every Tuesday and Sunday.

If your wondering what all the fuss is about that surrounds James and his talent, you must come see for yourself…it’s all well deserved. Southern Freestyle coached sessions run Sunday mornings from 09:00 until 11:00 and he’s guaranteed to be there! If your not quite ready to hit the jumps, we are running an Open Day on Sunday 25th October where there will be demonstrations from the freestyle guys, which will give you the motivation you need to pick up a board, or a pair of skis

11889455_10204599575284523_3262513913999546737_nAaron Carpenter (aged 19)

Aaron has skied with us for many years, he loves it that much he’s even chosen to become a ski instructor at the centre; he became part of the full time team earlier this year.

He’s heading to Manchester this weekend where he will be competing in the Indoor Slope style British Championships. Fingers crossed for Aaron, we hope to see something shiny returning with him from the North.

In 2014 Aaron came 2nd in the Great British Under 18’s Outdoor Slope style. Also that year he had a once in a lifetime chance to train in France with a well renowned British coach, JT – on a glacier!

 syOUV9QPAM9ol974CP4NpRNZgSsmKfCVDKw9l9DdhnYHarvey Stead (aged 19)

Another staff member with a bright light shinning on him, is Harvey Stead. He has represented Great Britain on numerous occasions for the Under 18’s and Under 20’s team.

Last year he found himself in Estonia just before the Christmas period where he was making the British nation proud. He is set to head abroad again this December to do just exactly that again!
